По-японски Норико значит “дитя порядка.” Это про Норико! Она очень порядочная. Все время сидит в профиль и смотрит в одну точку, например на деревце. Потом поднимает лапку и трогает ящерку, которая на нем сидит и смотрит на Норико.

Норико — ботаник.

Еще она порядочная, потому что не балывается. Не бегает, не прыгает, по заборам не лазиет и по крышам не гуляет, как ее брат. Но однажды ее кто-то напугал, и оказалось, что Норико тоже умеет бегать, прыгать и прятаться за углом.

Норико вся черная, а глаза у нее все зеленые. Когда темно, видно только Норикины глаза. Они светят, как две фары. Мне кажется, что Норико кто-то нарисовал черной тушью толстой кисточкой на мокрой бумаге, и она растеклась и перетекла к нам на улицу жить.

Недавно она помогала своему хозяину — он тоже японец — чинить машину (она тоже японская). Он лежал под машиной, а Норико ходила вокруг и проверяла, как он чинит. Оказалось, что у Норико косолапые передние лапки — косолапки. Она их ставит внутрь носочками. После этого хозяин стал такой же черный, как Норико и пошел в дом. Наверно мыться. А Норико вдруг взлетела на капот машины и там улеглась.

Норико умеет летать.

Who he is, what sort of creature he turned out to be, where he came from, and what he became famous for.
A whole book could be written about Eterik — it could even open a series titled The Lives of Remarkable Cats, because this cat was as remarkable as cats can possibly be — especially the ginger ones.

I only really — that is, independently — began keeping my Nature Observation Diary when I acquired a proper subject from the animal kingdom: an orange cat called Eterik, whom we named after Dad — Terrik!

How did Terry turn into Eterik? Simple: read on.

Dad was rather proud that a cat had been named after him, though he did occasionally grow jealous of the attention Eterik seemed to receive — more, he felt, than he ever did himself. You could write an entire book about Eterik, based on my Nature Observation Journal.

That’s when I began recording my own observations — starting with his grand entrance into our family, in a shoebox carriage, yelling his lungs out. He woke everyone in the house.

“Take him for a pound twenty!” as my Great-Babushka would say — meaning he was a bargain and a keeper.

Dad stared at him like a sheep at a new gate.

Mum, however, recovered first. She scooped the kitten up in one hand — he fit there like in a tiny boat — and immediately switched to addressing him as a boy:

“Sweetie, precious, tiny little thing, my little doughnut, my chubby-tailed boy, my tiny-clawed angel…”

Dad said cautiously,
“Perhaps it’s a girl. It’s so small — hard to tell.”

But Mum smiled broadly, held the kitten’s rear end right under Dad’s nose, and said:

“Eh, Terrik!”

(Mum always called Dad Terrik in the Russian way.)

Dad, unable to detect any obvious signs of masculinity, said, as usual,
“As Madame wishes…”

“Madame wishes to adopt him!” Mum declared, and swept off to the kitchen, her mane of hair trailing behind her.

Dad and I followed in a daze.

And so Eh, Terrik! became the kitten’s name. It soon shortened to Eterik, by which time Eterik himself had grown considerably — as he ate and ate.

The next entry in my journal recorded how Mum and Dad argued over who had the right to feed baby Eterik first — before he even had a name. Was it Dad’s right, since he had found him? Or Mum’s, since she knew how to do it properly?

In the end, Mum fed him milk from a pipette. Eterik lay on his back, eyes closed, blissfully suckling, his belly filling with milk, snuffling softly, and kneading the air with his tiny paws.

Dad and I watched this sacred act in awe — and found ourselves, quite unconsciously, smacking our lips.

That evening, Mum and I even composed a poem about him:

My baby brother’s born!
He’s sanguine — and a little bit choleric.
A tail, full tummy, teeny-weeny paws —
And so, to honour Dad, he’s called Eterik!

I wrote the first, third, and last lines. Mum contributed sanguine and choleric. She said a poem must rhyme at least once, and explained what the words meant.

If anyone is curious, sanguine and a little bit choleric means roughly the same as Illarion — cheerful and unruffled.

Once, on a cold, bleak, biting winter day, I went outside into the frost. The trees — lovely, dark, and deep — stood there just like in Moscow, wearing hats, scarves, mittens, and rhyme, only eyes showing. There wasn’t a soul anywhere. All the animals had hidden away wherever they could. Papa, for example, had hidden himself inside a blue cardigan, wrapped in a blanket by the fireplace — his nose was freezing.

And then I saw something unbelievable and was completely amazed: a little titmouse sitting on a branch. She looked like a blue-and-yellow mouse. Her nose was blue too, just like Papa’s.

So I decided to save her.

Luckily I happened to have with me some seeds: sunflower, millet, oats, shrapnel (that’s what my great-babushka calls pearl barley), and even pig fat seeds. I stretched out a helping hand — from inside my mitten.

The titmouse enjoyed her meal and said, “Thank you, mate!”

You wish! But she’s a bird. So when she finished eating, she pooped on my shoulder instead.

I watched her fly away for a long time.

The Observation Diary began as a “Diary of Observations of the Animal Nature.” Although, as we can see, it contained not only animals, but birds as well — and sometimes simply nature in the form of trees.

The attentive reader will surely notice that the early Larik was influenced not only by the mischievous style of his young mother Lisa, but also by Dickens in his frostiest moods and by Frost, when the trees grow “lovely, dark, and deep” — encased in “rhyme” (as Larik insists). The reason was simple: at first Larik kept forgetting to fill in his diary — not because he lacked powers of observation (quite the opposite). His observations fascinated him so much that he simply forgot to write them down. So quite often his mother filled in the diary for him. Together they invented all sorts of tall tales there on his behalf, like the one above.

Indeed, what terrible frost could there possibly be in London? Although, if the house isn’t properly heated and you can’t fall asleep without a hot-water bottle, one can see far stranger things through the creative crystal of one’s magical imagination. Not without a little help from Mama, of course — and from his public-school Papa, who believed heating ruined character.

“And why only me? We were both there!” Larik protested, referring to the titmouse who, if Mama is to be believed, pooped on Larik’s shoulder. He jumped straight into this delightful hooliganism — headfirst.

“You were the one she liked. And I’m the one who has to do the laundry!” Mama shot back.

America, America, a wonderland in and out:
There they swim in swimsuits and even without…

That’s how we used to sing about America in the courtyard when I was little, in my first childhood. I almost forgot the Russian language when we moved to Bikitania,
but I didn’t forget that song.

I don’t know. In America even fish swim in swimsuits. Take Sharks Cove, for example.
The word shark comes from the word shark, and cove comes from the words covet.
Grandma confirmed this. Grandpa coveted it so much that he bought it, together with the island it belongs to, though not with sharks. That is in Hawaiʻi.

I didn’t see any sharks, but the fish were all dressed into something that felt right.
Very fashionable. Vogue. Chick. I want to describe their swimsuits.

One had an orange one with white stripes. The white stripe was wide, and the black one was narrow.

Another fish looked like a triangle. Its swimsuit was also triangular: blue with yellow stripes. One fish was shimmering like blue… What can be blue and shimmer?

Even silver carps were wearing swimsuits. They were as silver as carpe diem. Said Grandpa. All swimsuits had a tail attached, shaped like a fish tail. And one fish looked like an Indian:

I was wearing swim trunks, fins, a mask, and a tube to breathe. But the beauty of the fishes was interfering with my breathing and was stopping me short. Of breath. I was so surprised that it shook me.

It’s a pity I didn’t have a camera to photograph them. They swam all around me and weren’t surprised at all. Probably they see people often, and people are not interesting to them.

Then we came home, and I drew all the fish so I wouldn’t forget. As if you could forget something like that! And then they started swimming along my walls — they had to be hung somewhere. And then I fell asleep and started swimming there
and they swam back and forth all through my sleep. All colorful and mysterious.

Now I want to be an ichthyander. That is a scientist who swims with fish
and doesn’t yawn at deportment meetings–not to breach deportment.

Grandma approved and said I should read The Amphibrachian Man.
A fish is my ideal human.

Who is Bellypip? Really just another Larik, only feathered.
Larik was born in snowy Moscow — which in fact, at the time, was all tulips, blossom-clouds of cherry and apricot, and the gauze veil of May rain. Still, “snowy Moscow” comforts those who were born where Bellypip was born — Hawai‘i. Not because they know anything about snow or Moscow, but because they were told their island is paradise and Moscow is snowy. A soothing thought.

Anyway, once upon a time of troubles Larik went with his class to Hawai‘i. And not from Moscow, but straight from foggy London (that eternally foggy London of legend — nothing more). We’ve described about that already, as Larik would say. But it never made it into the book: why overload an already elephantine childhood, stuffed with Moscow and London both? Not that Larik was an elephant – no-no! It’s all about his book: if bird-watching had crept in too, the wordcount would go through the roof and no publisher would have dared. None!

But rejoice: Bellypip and Co. did make it into the famous Diary of Nature Observations Larik kept from Year Three. That same diary that began with tales of Eterik.
You don’t know who Etherik is yet? Oh, the wonders you have in store!.. Another time. Marinate for now.

But hark!
Enter Bellypip.

“He doesn’t really know how to enter (or walk). What he knows is how to sit on a branch — high up and risky — in any weather, any wind, any rain, and wait for his mum. She must be frightfully strict, because he sits there all day and never flies off. I could never do that. And yet when Bellypip’s mum finally turns up, she still flutters about him, scolding as if he’d been off with Mary Poppins up to the rooftops and back again without a coat or wellies. Exactly like my mum.

I mean, scolding like my mum — not flying off with Mary Poppins. Though I do suspect she hasn’t told me everything about her own childhood. I’ll have to ask Babushka.

Babushka says that I used to call myself Bellypip when I was his age, staring at my belly button and patting my tummy with delight. But I think she invented that nickname herself. She always sees straight through to the root.

And Bellypip’s mum is like mine in another way: beautiful and graceful despite her loud voice. You get used to it — it even sounds like a song. Which one? You choose. And mum feeds Bellypip fish, just as mine feeds me. In that, Bellypip and I are identical twins.

One morning we were at breakfast, and outside on the tree (fifth floor, mind you!) sat Bellypip, motionless as ever (probably why he’s so fat and fluffy). Suddenly his graceful mum swooped in, because she does a lot of flying. This time she didn’t scold — her beak was full, something dangling from it. A sardine, as it turned out.

Bellypip perked up, flapped his wings, shuffled his little legs along the branch. He flung his head back as far as it would go — I mean tipped it back — and opened his beak wide, while his mum dropped the sardine in head-first. Bellypip swallowed it whole. Alive? Possibly. She’d snatched it straight from the ocean! He gulped it like a boa — he has no tooths, you see. Can’t chew.

And we all stood there, mouths hanging open too. Only nobody dropped a fish into ours.

Bellypip is a fairy turn. Only his mum looks fairy-like — he looks more like a pumpkin. Mum turns up at unexpected moments like a fairy but Bellypip cannot even turn around himself on his branch. Let alone turn into a carriage.”

At this point Larik’s mum, Lisa, adds her own two shillings (or whatever they add in their foggy London), parent-child collaborations — or “cow-workings,” as Larik naturally called them, warmly encouraged at his school:

“Bellypip isn’t a fairy turn but a fairy tern.”

Which remains foggy in meaning. Larik, with his etymological nose, tried to clear the mist.

One thing was certain: these birds act on people in a peculiar way. They carry messages from elsewhere. They make you believe everything will be all right. They pacify you.

“Only it turns out,” Lisa continues, “the Hawaiians call these terns manu-o-Kū — bird of Kū, god of war. Curious, isn’t it? Not to say “freaky” or “bizarre.” The same Hawaiians revere them as carriers of ancestral spirits, guides for sailors who set out without chart or compass, bare-headed under that tropical sun (!), not listening to their mums, and trusting only Bellypips. And their mums, too, had no one to rely on, except Bellypips! I could never do that!”

О птичках

Это история про Пупилика, а не про Ларика. Но все, что Ларик рассказывает, больше говорит нам о нем самом, нежели o том, о ком он говорит. Поэтому перефразируем Спинозу (или того, кто ему это приписывает): то, что Ларик говорит о Пупиликe, больше говорит о Ларике, чем о Пупилике. Вот вам философия для детей, изложенная на примере из жизни птичек (и детей).

Кто такой Пупилик? Тот же Ларик, только птичка. Ларик родился в заснеженной Москве, которая на самом деле была вся в тюльпанах, нежных облаках вишневого и абрикосового цветения и в легкой пелене майского дождика в те дни. Но сочетание «заснеженная Москва» ближе сердцу тех, кто родился там, где родился Пупулик – а родился он на Гавайях – не потому, что они вообще хоть что-то знают про снег или про Москву, а потому, что им так сказали, и их убаюкивает мысль о том, что у них там рай, а Москва заснеженная. Ну вы понимаете…

Так вот, Ларик был однажды с классом на Гавайях. И попал он туда не из Москвы, а прямо из туманного Лондона (опять таки, того самого Лондона, который в представлениях некоторых вечно туманный – не более того!). Мы об этом уже описывали, как говорит Ларик. Но в книгу это не вошло, чтобы не перегружать и так неподъемное количество слов, которыми Ларик описывает свое детство сначала в Москве, а потом в Лондоне. Если бы туда еще проникли его наблюдения за птичками, ни одно издательство не приняло бы его роман к напечатанию по причине слишкаммногабукаф. Ни одно!

Спешу вас обрадовать: истории про птичек типа Пупилика вошли в тот самый знаменитый дневник наблюдений (за живой природой), который Ларик вел с третьего класса. Это тот самый дневник, который начался с историй про Этерика. Вы еще не знаете, кто такой Этерик? О сколько вам открытий чудных…

Про Этерика как-нибудь в другой раз… Помаринуйтесь пока…

Входит Пупилик!

«Ходить он на самом деле не умеет, — пишет наш девятилетний (тогда) орнитолог. – Он умеет сидеть на веточке – высокой и опасной, в любую погоду, в любой ветер, и в любой дождь, и ждать маму. Мама, скорее всего, у него очень строгая, поэтому он сидит на своей веточке целыми днями и никуда не улетает. Я бы так не смог. Но мама Пупилика, когда прилетает, все равно начинает летать вокруг него и кричать так, как будто он летал с Карлсоном на крышу и обратно без шапки и резиновых сапог. Совсем, как моя мама. В смысле кричит, как моя мама, если кто-то подумал, что моя мама летает с Карлсоном на крышу. Хотя, мне кажется, мама не все мне рассказывает про свое детство. Надо спросить бабушку.

Бабушка говорит, что Пупиликом называл себя я, когда был в возрасте Пупилика и разглядывал свой пуп, т.е. пузико, и хлопал сам себя по нему от радости. Но я все же думаю, что это она сама придумала мне такое прозвище.

А еще мама Пупилика похожа на мою тем, что она красивая и изящная несмотря на громкий голос. Но к нему тоже быстро привыкаешь, и он звучит, как песня. Какая? А-а-а-рлекино, Арлекино! А еще мама кормит Пупилика рыбкой, как и моя меня. В этом мы с Пупиликом братья-близнецы.

Однажды мы сидели завтракали, а за окном на дереве (на пятом этаже!) сидел Пупилик и как всегда не двигался (скорее всего поэтому он такой толстый и пухлый). И тут налетела изящная мама, потому что много летает. В тот раз она не кричала. Потому что рот у нее был занят: из него что-то висело. Оказалось, сардинка. Зато Пупилик засуетился и даже помахал крыльями и поперебирал ножками по веточке, на которой он сидел.

Он закинул свою голову так далеко, как смог – в смысле откинул – и настежь открыл рот, а мама опустила ему туда сардинку вниз головой. И Пупилик ее заживо съел. Не знаю, была ли она еще живая, но мама поймала ее прямо в океане! Он заглотил ее как удав – у него же нет зубков. Поэтому он не может жевать.

А мы все стояли и смотрели тоже с открытыми ртами. Но нам никто туда рыбку не клал.

Пупилик это фея крячка. На фею похожа только его мама. а он сам похож на тыкву. И крячка это очень точное название: мама Пупилика все время крякает, хоть не утка а Пупилик за ней повторяет, как может. Но, по-моему, он пока не научился ни говорить, ни крякать».

Дальше идет, по всей видимости, дополнение, сделанное лариковой мамой, Лизой (детско-родительские коллаборации и коровкинги (конечно, от слова «коровка», горячо приветствовались в той школе, где учился Ларик) , о том, что «никакой Пупилик ни «фея крячка», а «фея крачка»». Что это значит, однако, туманно. Ларик же со своим этимологическим чутьем пытался этот туман хоть как-то рассеять. Ясно только одно: птицы эти обладают особенным действием на людей. Они как будто несут какое-то послание людям откуда-то не отсюда. Они вселяют веру в то, что все будет хорошо. Они умиротворяют.

«Однако, как оказалось, – продолжает Лиза, гавайцы называют этих крачек по-гавайски manu-o-Kū, т.е. bird of Kū– птица бога войны. Все это очень странно, ведь те же гавайцы почитают Пупиликов как носителей духа предков, как птиц, которые помогают мореплавателям найти дорогу домой: утром они вылетают в море, а к вечеру возвращаются на землю, ведя за собой этих отважных мореплавателей без руля без ветрил и без головных уборов под таким солнцем (!), которые выходили в море без карт и без компасов, не слушаясь своих мам, и надеялись только на Пупиликов. И мамам их было не на кого надеяться, кроме Пупиликов! Я бы так не смогла!»
